THE ART OF RAQUEL ORMELLA

Raquel Ormella, born in Kuranulla/Cronulla, Sydney in 1969, grew up in Western Sydney and now lives in Canberra. She has taught at ANU since 2006 and completed a PhD in 2013. Her critically acclaimed artworks have been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Ormella’s diverse practice spans textiles, video, posters, banners, installations, and works on paper, often exploring themes of politics and social change. Engaging with grassroots movements, she examines national identity and environmental issues, blending material experimentation with conceptual depth. Her works recontextualize political phrases, slogans, and songs, using textiles and text to challenge and provoke thought.
