Badger (William Brian) Bates, a Barkandji Elder born in Wilcannia, NSW, in 1947, reflects his deep connection to the Barka (Darling River) through linocuts, wood carvings, emu egg etchings, stone, and metalwork. His art preserves Cultural Knowledge, tells the stories of his ancestors, and raises awareness about the river’s ecological challenges. Bates’ work highlights the vital relationship between First Nations people and the land, urging recognition of Indigenous stewardship.
Beyond art, Bates is an advocate for Barka’s protection, sharing insights on climate change and human impact. His lived experience offers valuable ecological knowledge, complementing scientific studies. Through his practice, he bridges cultural traditions with urgent environmental concerns.
